The BRE Innovation Park Network has been established to inform sustainable development at a global level and stimulate innovation within the built environment. With Parks established within the UK and China, and further facilities being developed in Brazil and Canada, the Innovation Park Network is unique in its approach, its global reach, and its impact.
The Innovation Parks feature full-scale demonstration buildings that have been developed by industry partners. These buildings display innovative design, materials and technologies which combine to address the development challenges facing regions across the world.
Technology demonstration, research, testing training and dissemination are key activities which underpin the operation and development of the Innovation Park Network. BRE works closely with a large number of partners from the academia, public and private sectors to shape out activities and ensure that these have a positive impact on the development community.
Our vision for the BRE Innovation Parks is to establish a unique and unparalleled research and demonstration network, which inspires and develops innovative solutions that will inform the development of the global built environment. This network will work with stakeholders to identify and support innovations which demonstrate true sustainability and deliver social, economic and environmental benefits at the national and international levels.
BRE aims to develop a community of international Parks with careful planning, co-ordination and clarity. This will be achieved by focusing on five key principles:
Assessing the performance of our Innovation Park buildings is a core element of our activities. BRE has established a consistent methodology for assessing Innovation Park building performance, which uses dynamic simulation techniques to provide detailed information on various performance parameters. Using this approach, BRE can predict operational performance of buildings across different geographical areas, under various occupancy profiles, and factors relating to orientation and site positioning.
As well as the construction method of the houses themselves there are a number of products on each of the buildings and around the Park that contribute to the holistic approach to sustainable homes and communities. While BRE always promotes a "Fabric First" approach to construction, choosing the best materials for the construction, it is then necessary to select the optimal system for heating and hot water, and then choose what renewables can complement the building to achieve low to zero carbon emissions. In addition, ventilation, lighting, daylighting and appliance use can all impact on the performance of the building, and the embodied energy of potable water should not be underestimated.
