Previously used to insulate NASA spacecraft, gas pipelines and for other industrial purposes, Aerogel has been adapted for use in buildings. It is injected into 80mm matting, which have been internally fitted to the west and south walls exterior walls. It gives an extremely high thermal performance at a fraction of the space of conventional insulation.
The silicon-based material is made up of 95% air held within a microscopic network of voids, trapping heat instantly so that it is an extremely effective insulator. Because it is also breathable, Aerogel is particularly beneficial to older buildings.
